Mr. Alex Tamoria, Chair
Hawaii Air Tour Noise & Safety Task Force
Aloha Chair Tamoria and Task Force Members,
My name is Yuki Lei Sugimura, and I currently serve on the Maui County Council. I chair the Council’s Infrastructure and Transportation Committee, which yesterday heard an item related to aircraft noise over Maui County. The County Council has heard from residents across our tri-isle County with concerns about noise related to rotor and fixed-wing aerial tours, as well as noise from cargo and passenger aircraft flying over the County.
I would like to bring these concerns to the attention of the task force, in hopes of finding resolutions for our residents in Maui County. We have heard concerns regarding helicopter tours from residents in East Maui, Haiku, Waihee, Kahakuloa, Maalaea, and Kihei on Maui Island as well as from residents on Molokai. Concerns are largely centered on the noise created by the frequency of tour flights, the low flying level of these aircraft, and the time of day when these aircraft pass through these areas.
On today’s agenda, you will be discussing a proposed meeting schedule for 2022. I would like to request, if you have some flexibility in your schedule, to hold a meeting on Maui to hear the concerns of the residents of Maui County.
I thank you for your time and consideration. I, as well as our other Councilmembers at the local level, stand by willing to work with our Federal and State partners to support solutions to air traffic noise for our residents.
